2024 Cultivators Zine

Welcome to the 2024 Cultivators Zine

Within these pages, you will find the adventures of our 2024 Black Teen Cultivators. They share the knowledge they gained, the art and poems they created, and the pictures that tell the story of their summer together. This is the culmination of their creativity and vision.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to several remarkable individuals whose contributions have been instrumental in making this project a success.

First and foremost, our heartfelt thanks go to Fatuma Emmad, the co-founder and Executive Director of Frontline Farming. Your vision, leaders, and unwavering commitment to agricultural education and community empowerment have been the cornerstone of this initiative. Your leadership and passion have inspired us all and made a significant impact on the lives of so many.

We are equally grateful to Dr. Damien Thompson, co-founder and Director of the Center for Food Justice and Healthy Communities. Your guidance, thoughtfulness, and expertise have been vital in shaping and guiding our programs. Your support and encouragement have been invaluable to us throughout this journey.

A special thank you to Kourtnie Burse, who manages the Black Youth Cultivators program. Your dedication to nurturing and guiding our youth has created an environment where they feel supported and motivated. Your efforts in managing this program have not gone unnoticed and have made a lasting difference in the lives of the participants.

We would also like to give special thanks to our Sister Gardens Farm Managers, Alexis Albanez and Stacy Compoz, and Greenhouse Manager Levi Sisneros. Your support with teen farm tasks was exceptional and inspiring. Your guidance and hands-on involvement have greatly enriched the experience for our youth and ensured that they gained valuable skills and knowledge on the farm.

Finally, we express our sincere appreciation to all of our farm staff. Your warmth and dedication in making the teens feel welcomed and valued have been extraordinary. The positive atmosphere you have cultivated has greatly contributed to the success of our programs and the personal growth of each participant.

Thank you all for your hard work, support, and belief in our mission. This achievement is a testament to your collective efforts and dedication.

With deep appreciation,

The 2024 Teen Cultivators Team
